The term 'toccata' (from the Italian toccare 'to touch') was one of the first used to designate music for a keyboard. Originally it was a short improvisation - a kind of impromptu prelude - played at the beginning of a church service or a concert, allowing the musician to connect with the instrument. It subsequently developed to become a demonstration of the performer's talent.
